Unlocking the Celestial Light Show

The most dramatic nighttime transformation caused by the Sun is the aurora borealis and australis.

  • Solar Wind Collisions: When the Sun ejects streams of charged particles or unleashes massive Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs), these solar winds travel across space and slam into Earth’s magnetic field.
  • The Atmospheric Canvas: As these particles interact with gases in our upper atmosphere, they ignite glowing ribbons of green, pink, and purple, turning a standard starry night into an active cosmic theater.

Bleeding Out the Stars

While the Sun can add brilliant colors to the night, it can also completely erase the stars.

  • Daytime Bleedover: During a solar storm or periods of intense solar flare activity, the Earth’s upper atmosphere (the ionosphere) can become heavily energized, causing increased airglow—a faint emission of light from planetary gases.
